National Provider Identifier
Have you registered for your National Provider Identifier Number
yet? The final rule establishing the NPI as the standard unique
health provider identifier for health care providers (if
you are a transportation provider for health plan members, this
includes you) was published in 2004 and required all
covered entities to be in compliance with its provisions by May
23, 2007, except for small health plans, which must be in
compliance by May 23, 2008.
On April 2, 2007 the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services
(CMS) announced that it is implementing a contingency plan for
covered entities who will not be able to meet the May 23, 2007
NPI compliant deadline. A contingency plan may not extend
beyond May 23, 2008. Getting an NPI is easy and free. To
